LamBam on "Work and CPA struggle"

I need/will study for my CPA at work to take advantage of every extra minute. But I’m worried some of my smug-CPA holders-colleagues will not stop asking of “how many parts did you take?.. when is your exam? .. did you pass?.. da da da” then u have to explain why I took a 74.. why I didn’t pass from the first time like most of them (I don’t know how! I know annoying) and feel unintelligent in comparison.

How do you guys do it? Avoid answering such questions?
They always say don’t tell anyone your preparing for the exam especially you manager.. (But for sure he’ll see me preparing!!)

I have enough pressure myself to handle the pressure of “Must pass from the 1st time like smug colleagues or else look stupid and less intelligent inform of management”
Hiding from family and friends is easy.. but work? Sorry no I won’t waste time there must study there.

I'm in internal audit in higher education and love it. Problem is, I only get exposed to operational audits and some financial consulting (no financial statement experience). I would love to stay in internal audit and use it to move into operations management or risk management.

My dilemma: I worked my ass off for my CPA license. Will my license hurt me or help with this path into operational/risk management? Also, will my lack of public accounting experience hold me back?

So I've been struggling to find a supervisory role in industry mainly because my background is in higher education and have not acquired such supervisory role anywhere.

I currently work for the equivalent of a "big4" in the oil & gas industry in Houston (reputable with instant name recognition, $45+ billion in revenues, 120k+ employees worldwide) doing full P&L and balance sheets for Latin America. I have 16 months exp. with this employer and received my first annual review rating of "exceeds expectations."

I've been searching the Houston job market and have this offer.

A Staff Accountant role with a small international manufacturing company using Cognos, Standard Cost accounting, IFRS, FX translation, and financial reporting. Will work on optimizing the system. The idea is to groom this position into a Senior Accountant/Assistant Controller in a year or two with supervisory role with 1 or 2 direct reports.

Salary and benefits are comparable.

My Dilemma:
Since the future is unknown regarding my career with current and prospective employer, what would be the smart move here?

Stay with current employer and see what they have to offer in a year or two OR take the offer?

Worst Case Scenario:

I accept the offer and I don't get promoted into supervisory role after two years. I think this will set me back because I will be asked why I left such a good company. It would not be wise to say "because I wanted a supervisory role but didn't get it."

What to accept

If your of the opinion that I should reject the offer, what would have to change in the offer in order to accept it?

I sat for the test today which is my last one. first testlet went well, second testlet was hard, third testlet was medium/hard.

i have 1 research question which i got it right. I hope it is not the pre-test question. I got in 3 minutes. It is really a bonus question if you know how to nagivate around with the literature literacy.
One simulation question was journal entry which was straight forward; common journal entry.
The other five questions were drop down questions which i could manage moderately well. Properly, i could get 60% or more right. I attempt every part which at least i know moderately well for the topic but could not be absolute with the answers.

I really need to pass this one because the regulation will expire if i fail.

3 already down!
Audit : 66! in Nov 14.

I'm seeing quite a few people posting in the Score Release thread that they are done with the exam - only to have their accomplishment quickly fade away due to the high volume of posting.

They deserve better.

If you're done with the exam - post it here ...

Write however much or however little you want, because this is is your thread and you've earned it.

I will start with this

Long Term Contracts - % of Completion Method

Use the following 4 steps :)

1. Total Contact - Estimated Cost = Estimated Profit
2. Cost to Date / Estimated Cost = % of Completion
3. Estimated Total Profit X % of Completion = GP to Date
4. GP to Date - GP to Date from Prior Period = GP for Current Period

ATG618 on "Advice for applying for CPA License in Illinois"

I just finished the CPA license process in Illinois, and horrendous is a understatement as to my experience waiting to get my license to practice. I just wanted to give some helpful advice to my fellow brothers (and sisters!) in accounting arms pursuing the CPA license and hoping to get their license in Illinois.

Here a few helpful tips:
1) My advice is that after you finish your last exam get right started on the ethics exam. That way when you have received the good news that you passed, you can go straight into licensing process.

2) The ILBOA only sends out the Certificate showing that you completed the CPA exam and ethics requirements twice a month, but it is sent electronically!
-I would call and confirm that ILBOA has sent the certificate to the IDPFR (Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation).
-I would also call and confirm that the IDPFR has received your application and the CPA certificate.

3) RTFM! RTFM! Read the instructions on the application for license like your life depends on it, you don't want to have resubmit information because you're "instructionally challenged" (Yes, I made up that term). There is nothing worse than receiving a denial letter asking for additional information because you were too dumb to follow the instructions the first time (I fall into this group sadly O__O )

4) You can call the IDPFR and get updates on your application status, don't be afraid to do this (they have a call center). I would call confirm that they have received your application, received your CPA certificate, and closer to the 6 weeks mark for status updates on any deficiencies, or simply to annoy them because you are anxious and can't wait (that would be me)
.
5) It takes the Evaluators 10 to 15 business days to receive your application (or any additional information mailed in) ONCE it arrives at the IDPFR mailing room. My experience has been closer to 10 business days as a good estimate.

6) The general expected time for them process your application is 6 to 8 weeks, but this is only if you do not have any errors or deficiencies in your application.

7) In regards to the experience verification form: IL does not require that your experience be obtained under the supervision of an CPA , verified by an CPA, or solely in public accounting (see the regulations on the IDPFR site for more info).
-Per the instructions make sure that you fill out your portion of the form, and THEN have your employer fill out the second part.
-To be safe, I suggest you have the form filled out after you have received your certificate since this information should be included on the form, and I would also request that your employer put the form in a sealed company envelope so that you can include it with your application with proof of it being untampered with.
-Note: I had this particular issue with my application. I had my employer fill out the form and then I added my certificate number after the fact. I of course received a rejection letter and had to have the form refilled out and sent from my previous employer, not fun.

8) Also, you are allowed to type information into the pdf versions of the form. So if you need to send a form to a previous employer this is the way to do it! You still have to provide original ink signatures though.

9) I also suggest that you include a print out of the letter that the ILBOA emails you stating that they have sent the your CPA certificate information to the IDPFR.

10) Prepare yourself for the lowest low after the highest high of seeing those three letters behind your name. In some ways I think I got used to the struggle. Now, it's kinda like ok, that's done so what do I do now???

Hi, I just received the license number yesterday from Illinois state.
The certificate is printed to A4 paper. I am not sure if there will be another version of certificate ?

another question is that the license was issued yesterday , and the expiration date will be another 7 months. Should it be at least 2 years for the expiration for the license ?

My ex-boss was a GT alum; and in 2012 he introduced me to "Picture this". It's a tool that allows to make a screenshot of any size. The beauty of it is the fact that screenshot floats in active window. You can have your screenshot and excel open at the same time. Really helpful when working with two spreadsheets.

Unfortunately, I lost the download link. It was a legitimate download, available to public. Googled my heart out to no avail.

Can anyone please share the link or suggest a similar tool?

Thank you in advance!

kettlecorn on "Does anyone work in IT audit or risk advisory?"

I'm looking into these positions.

Apparently the upside is better hours than financial audit but you get pigeonholed into it. But I can't imagine it's any worse than being "pigeonholed" in tax. IT audit means you can still do internal audit in industry, government, university, or continue to do IT related accounting work right?

If any of you work in IT audit, what firm and how many hours do you average? I'm reading it's around 55 hours? Does that include driving? I know a lot of IT audit and control work involve driving to client sites (well audit in general) but unlike financial audit where you may be at a client site for a long time (possible to drive 2 hours every day for months), you would be at client sites for a few days on average.

On average, how much mentally draining work is there in IT audit? Is it like programming where you need to think and use brain power a lot, or is a lot of the work busy work, talking, writing reports, etc.?

Any good exit opportunities when you jump to industry? How many years should you work in the field as an IT auditor to be desirable when you make the jump?

If simulation is based on random selection and not how we perform in MCQ , can we conclude its purely luck? How can AICPA compare a easy simulation with a tough one? When we get our comparable score obviously the one who got a easy simulation will be stronger than the person who got a easy one.

For e.g my audit simulation was very hard but lot of persons in this forum said their simulation were word to word from AL. This baffles me how this can be a uniformity in scoring?

Hey guys and girls,

I need your help again lol

So, shortly after passing the CPA exams, audit firms are suddenly more interested in me.Even though I don't have offers yet, I have gone to several interviews.

In your opinions, what's the Pros and Cons of Governmental/Non Profit Audits vs For Profit Companies' Audits?

Which are the differences and which one has better exit opportunities?

Thanks!

Hi All,

I have a question regarding CPE requirements. Does the 150 per 3 year rule begin once you actually become accredited or is there some sort of CPE needed to get the license in the first place?

Reason I ask - when I originally began working 4 years ago at Big 4 and was studying, CPE requirements never phased me because of how much training you do that results in credits. 3.5 years later, I didn't pass my exam and I'm now going to begin studying again. The issue is that at the private firm I've worked at for the past 2 years, i've done next to no CPE whatsoever.

I did print out a schedule of all the CPE I had taken at Big 4, which now dates almost 2 years (for what it's worth). Any clarity on the issue would help - thank you!

I have JUST started studying for FAR. The exam's scheduled for 4/24. I am NOT working at the moment, but I have a few 1-1.5 CPE webinars (to maintain my CMA) in my schedule, in addition to doctor's appointments here and there, weekly grocery shopping and lunches with Mom, etc. I may do some p/t temp work if and when I can get it, and may need to go to a few interviews to obtain same. Oh, yes, and I do have to get my tax return in by 4/15! With this minimalist schedule, does it sound possible to effectively use the little time between now and 4/24 to pass this thing?

During busy season, there's been times when I've stayed til the AMs and I'll be the only person left and it creeps me out. But I prefer working in the office vs. at home (obviously single and awesome life here :D)...

Anyway, I was just listening to music and a commercial came on and it involved a skit with a door knock and I got freaked out thinking there was something behind me... Also, just random noises in general give me the creeps.

Okay, end random thoughts...
